The Fabric

WOOL

Wool is a type of fiber that is obtained from sheep and some other animals. Wool from goats is called cashmere and mohair, from muskoxen is qiviut and from rabbit - angora.
It is used for fabrics because it is easy to spin. It also has scaling and crimp and because of that it is more bulky which causes it to retain air and with air - heat. That helps with isolating the body from outside cold but also from the heat. It is also easy to felt the wool.

Although human race domesticated sheep between 9000BC and 7000BC they were more hairy than wooly and had to be bred by selection around 6000BC. First woven wool garments date from 400BC to 300BC. At about the same time woolly-sheep came to Europe from the Near East. In the beginning, wool was plucked from the sheep by hand or by bronze combs. The first shear appeared in the Iron Age. In Roman times, the finest wool came from Tarentum, a coastal city in today’s Puglia, Southern Italy.
The Medici and other great houses of Florence had built their wealth on their textile industry based on wool.

The Care

WOOL CARE

Wool garments require less washing than the other dominant apparel fibres and generally have a much longer life.
Easy to care for
Regardless of which method you use to wash your wool garment, we recommend to turn it inside out before washing it. This will prolong the item’s ‘as new’ look and feel.
Garments carrying the Machine Washable label can be safely machine washed in a washing machine multiple times, without shrinkage taking place. Ideally garments carrying such labels should be washed on the wool setting (usually gentle action at 40°C). If your washing machine does not have a wool cycle, then it is recommended to use the cold water wash or wash cycle for delicates. It is recommended that garments are flat dried after washing.
If your garment states Hand Wash Only, then hand wash in clean, lukewarm water, approximately 30°C, using a mild and gentle detergent. Allow to soak for a period of 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly firstly in lukewarm water, then finally in cold water.
Dry away from direct sunlight or heat
If wool gets wet, dry the garment at room temperature away from direct sunlight or heat.
Ironing
Many wool garments do not require ironing, but very smooth fabrics may look better if pressed. Always use steam when pressing wool. Set your iron on the wool setting and avoid ironing the fabric when it is totally dry.
